The streak is over.
After going 0-5 against Southern in the last three seasons, Orange left no doubt who the best team is in the Big 8 3A Conference with a convincing 49-7 win in Friday night football.
The Panthers keep their unbeaten streak alive at 6-0 (1-0), while the Spartans (2-4, 0-1) suffered their worst defeat since a 42-7 loss to Jack Britt in 2012.
“This has really turned into a rivalry over the past few years,” said Orange junior Payton Wilson, who scored two touchdowns. “We had a game plan coming in and we stuck to it.”
Orange took a 6-0 lead when junior running back Marvante Beasley ran untouched for 20 yards. The PAT was blocked.
But the Spartans came right back with a four-play, 57-yard drive, highlighted by quarterback Jalen Greene’s pretty 42-yard scamper for a 7-6 lead with 5:49 left in the first quarter.
From that point it was all Orange, which scored 15 straight points: QB Jackson Schmid’s 27-yard pass to wide receiver Cody Evans and a Wilson 65-yard punt put the Panthers up 21-7 at halftime.
And the rout was on.
After Southern recovered a fumble at the Orange 30 with a minute left in the first half, Ryan Puckett intercepted Greene. The Spartans never recovered.

THEY SAID IT
