Wake Forest players replaced on Shrine Bowl football roster

newsobserver.com

Two Wake Forest High School players selected to play in the 2016 Shrine Bowl football game have been replaced on the roster after their team advanced to Saturday’s 4AA state championship.

A Middle Creek linebacker was selected as an alternate.

Both the Shrine Bowl and state championship will be played on the same day, making Wake Forest’s Darius Hodge, a 6-2, 240-pound inside linebacker, and Xachary Gill, a 6-5, 270-pound defensive lineman, unavailable to play in the all-star game. Hodge is committed to N.C. State and Gill is undecided.

The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas is an annual senior all-star game that pits the best seniors from North Carolina against the best seniors from South Carolina.

Devondrez Moore of Orange High School, will replace Hodge. Zeke Brandel of Chase High School in Forest City, will replace Gill, a four-star recruit. Brandel is committed to Appalachian State.

Also receiving a last-minute roster spot as an alternate is Middle Creek’s John Singleton, a 6-5, 207-pound outside linebacker. Singleton was the SWAC defensive player of the year in 2016, and is undecided. Singleton finished the season with 70 tackles, 10 of them for a loss, and 7.5 sacks. He also blocked three punts, had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Wake Forest beat Middle Creek 21-17 Friday to go to the North Carolina state finals on a game-winning 1-yard touchdown run in overtime by junior running back Devon Lawrence. Wake Forest will play Page High School of Greensboro in the 4AA state championship game at Carter-Finley Stadium, Saturday at 3:05 p.m.

The Shrine Bowl will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wofford College’s Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg.
