Friday’s high school football playoff previews, NC statewide schedule

(Observer’s Sweet 16 rankings are included)

MECKLENBURG COUNTY PREVIEWS

Charlotte Catholic (7-2) at Marvin Ridge (7-2), 4A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – These are familiar foes, having competed against each other the past four years in the Southern Carolina 3A Conference. The Cougars are 6-0 all-time against Marvin Ridge, including a 21-17 nail-biter last April 9. The Mavericks scored three late touchdowns last week and gave Weddington a scare, with sophomore QB Evan Medders throwing two long scoring passes.

Charlotte Christian (4-5) at Christ School (4-4), NCISAA Division 1 playoffs, 7 p.m. – This is a rematch of a game from two weeks ago, which Christ School won 34-31 in overtime. The visiting Knights have been the area’s hard-luck team this season, with two overtime losses and five games decided by a touchdown or less.

Christ the King (3-7) at South Stokes (6-4), 1A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – It’s a big night for the visiting Crusaders, who are in the football playoffs for the first time. It’ll be a short postseason for Christ the King if it can’t stop Sauras QB Junior Hairston, who is averaging 230 passing yards a game.

East Gaston (6-4) at Community School of Davidson (8-2), 2A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – This is a tough spot for the host Spartans, champions of the Catawba Shores 1A-2A. East Gaston has a powerful ground game, led by Justin Hill (1,563 yards, 14 touchdowns) and Markel McKinney (1,057 yards, 13 touchdowns). The Spartans counter with an effective air game, as QB Jameson Davies is averaging about 160 passing yards per contest.

Mallard Creek (4-4) at Butler (7-2), 4A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – These two teams were Mecklenburg’s powerhouses during the last decade, with Mallard Creek owning a 10-4 lead in the series, including victories in the last three meetings. They are playing for the seventh time in the postseason (in the last 12 years). Butler QB Xavion Brower is averaging 150 passing and 50 rushing yards per contest.

Mooresville (6-4) at Myers Park (7-3), 4A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – Myers Park QB Lucas Lenhoff has thrown for 2,279 yards this season but has been held in check the last two weeks. The visiting Blue Devils have won four in a row and limited opponents to an average of 6.7 points a game during that stretch. LB Jared Logan has 7.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss, and is averaging seven tackles a game.

North Mecklenburg (5-4) at Weddington (9-1), 4A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – Two excellent defensive teams square off, as Weddington, a state power in 3A the past several years, makes the jump to 4A. The visiting Vikings will try to take advantage of a Warrior defense that gave up two long pass plays for touchdowns last week against Marvin Ridge.

North Raleigh Christian (7-2) at Charlotte Country Day (1-8), NCISAA Division 2 playoffs, 7 p.m. – A 7-2 team against a 1-8 team. It looks like a blowout, right? Well, Charlotte Country Day’s lone victory this season was a 24-7 decision over North Raleigh Christian on Oct. 8. The visitors are led by QB Connor McGann, who has thrown for 1,157 yards this season (with just one interception).

Northwest Guilford (5-5) at Ardrey Kell (7-2), 4A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – Two longtime state powers and rivals in volleyball meet on the football field. Northwest Guilford QB Tanner Ballou (2,105 yards) and WR Trenton Cloud (57 receptions) are a strong combination. But Ballou has thrown 14 interceptions this season, and the host Knights have a strong secondary.

Page (4-6) at Hough (10-0), 4A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – Page enters this game off a three-game losing streak. RB Trevon Hester (1,112 rushing yards, 19 touchdowns) leads the offense. Hough QB Tad Hudson has thrown for 21 touchdowns, but RB J.T. Smith is a short-yardage scoring threat, with 10 touchdowns.

Providence (6-4) at Glenn (7-2), 4A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – In late September, Providence was 1-4. The Panthers have won their last five games, outscoring foes 151-31. Their defense faces a tough test against a Glenn offense averaging 42 points a game. The Bobcats have scored more than 60 points twice.

South Caldwell (7-2) at Chambers (9-1), 4A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – Chambers begins a bid for a third consecutive state championship. Standing in the Cougars’ way in Round 1 is a South Caldwell team that has forced 19 turnovers off opponents this season.

Stuart Cramer (5-5) at West Charlotte (6-3), 3A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – West Charlotte drops from 4A to the 3A ranks and enters this game off a strong 37-7 romp over North Mecklenburg last week. The visiting Storm is led by junior QB Justin Rocquemore, who has passed for 1,856 yards and rushed for another 611.

West Forsyth (5-4) at South Mecklenburg (8-2), 4A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – Don’t let records deceive you. The visiting Titans play in arguably the state’s toughest 4A conference, the Central Piedmont. Each team has a powerful running back – Jevante Long for West Forsyth, and Jacob Newman for the Sabres.

OUTSIDE MECKLENBURG

A.C. Reynolds (7-3) at Hickory Ridge (8-2), 4A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – Fans get to see a pair of outstanding quarterbacks, in Reynolds’ Ricky Tolbert (66-of-99 completions for 843 yards) and Hickory Ridge’s Alex Bentley (1,910 yards and 22 touchdowns).

Asheville School (6-3) at Metrolina Christian (9-1), NCISAA Division 2 playoffs, 7 p.m. – Asheville School QB Rayden Aphayvong has thrown for 2,050 yards, with 21 touchdowns and just one interception. He faces a Metrolina Christian defense that has 60 tackles for loss this season.

Pine Lake Prep (6-3) at Chase (9-1), 2A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – Pine Lake Prep’s outstanding defense (13 points per game allowed) faces a huge test, as Chase RB Marqies McCombs has rushed for an unworldly 2,408 yards and 33 touchdowns this season.

West Rowan (6-3) at North Lincoln (8-2), 3A playoffs, 7:30 p.m. – West Rowan’s explosive offense is averaging 38 points a game. The host Knights will try to control the ball, and they have a weapon for that in RB Kyle Kovalchuk, who has rushed for 837 yards this season.
