It’s the final week of the regular season, which means many teams in The News & Observer’s greater Triangle wrestling rankings are trying to close out conference titles or earn automatic dual-team playoff bids.
The week’s biggest match is No. 5 Athens Drive at No. 2 Cary. A Cary win would create a three-way tie for the second and final automatic playoff spot out of the Southwest Wake Athletic 4A Conference. An Athens Drive win puts the Jaguars in second, No. 9 Panther Creek in third and Cary – which lost to the Catamounts earlier without several starters – in fourth.
No. 4 Orange travels to No. 8 Chapel Hill on Thursday for the Big Eight 3A Conference title. Third-ranked Corinth Holders, No. 7 South Granville, No. 12 Union Pines and No. 14 Riverside also can close out conference titles this week.
No. 6 Sanderson will try to claim another Cap Eight title against Millbrook (17-3), which fell out of the top 15 after a loss to Leesville Road. The Pride and Ravenscroft jumped into the rankings, replacing the Wildcats and Fuquay-Varina.
