Wake Forest is No. 1 in the N.C. high school football Associated Press poll.

The Cougars have spent all season at No. 2 but received a bump when Charlotte’s Mallard Creek lost last week. Mallard Creek, which has beaten Wake Forest in the past two state title games, is No. 7.

Middle Creek, No. 8, is the only other Triangle team in the rankings.

The News & Observer’s J. Mike Blake is an AP voter. The AP voting results are on the left, with Blake’s ballot on the right.

JMB’s thoughts: Few will agree with me on my 4A top 10 knocking out Mallard Creek. But the Mavericks, which lost to Hough in overtime last week, can work their way back in if they knock off Kannapolis Brown. For me, it’s a move that I had to make now, but I know it might be short-lived. West Rowan joins my top 10 in 3A, replacing West Craven (lost to Havelock). In 2A, Franklin replaces East Bladen and 1A replaces Rosewood with East Wilkes.
