Joey Logano swept the weekend at Watkins Glen International.
After dominating Saturday’s Xfinity Series race, Logano overtook Kevin Harvick on the final lap of the Cheez-It 355.
Logano knew he had enough fuel to finish, while Harvick’s fuel cell ran dry at the end.
Kyle Busch, who must finish in the top 30 in driver points, finished second with Harvick third. Matt Kenseth was fourth and Kurt Busch was fifth.
Logano had never won at Watkins Glen prior to this weekend.
With other drivers needing to conserve fuel, Logano started passing leaders, taking second place with seven laps left in pursuit of Harvick.
Three who mattered
Logano: He drove Saturday’s race to get extra practice on the seven-turn Watkins Glen road course.
AJ Allmendinger: He started as the pole winner, but he lost lots of track position with about 40 laps left when his car wouldn’t restart.
Jeff Gordon: Early problems with his brakes left Gordon four laps down before this race’s midpoint on a day when he seemed a contender to win and clinch a Chase spot.
▪ This race is Sprint Cup’s only stop in New York state, and attendance was excellent Sunday – Watkins Glen International sold out its reserved grandstand seating.
▪ Pretty bizarre when the hood on Denny Hamlin’s car came loose mid-race. His crew cut it away on a pit stop, but debris kept dropping off the car, causing a caution.
▪ There are only four tracks on the Cup schedule where Jimmie Johnson has never won. He continues to be 0-for-Watkins Glen.
They said it
“We were patient and methodical all race long.” – Logano.
