Michael Kidd-Gilchrist vs. Gordon Hayward: The Hornets were prepared to spend a bundle to sign Hayward over the summer, but the Jazz chose to match a four-year, $63 million offer sheet. Hayward is a big-time scorer/shotmaker. Kidd-Gilchrist is the Hornets’ top defender.
• The Jazz hired former Duke point guard Quin Snyder as their head coach. Snyder’s specialty is all sorts of sophisticated pick-and-rolls. The then-Bobcats considered Snyder for their past two head-coach openings.
• Al Jefferson was available in free-agency two summers ago because the Jazz decided to rebuild, not re-signing Jefferson and Paul Millsap.
• This is the second night of back-to-back games for both teams. The Jazz was at the Magic, the Hornets at the 76ers.
• This is another busy stretch for the Hornets, with four games in five nights before Christmas.
