Greg Monroe vs. Cody Zeller: The Pistons chose Monroe over Josh Smith, who they cut this season. Monroe is a multi-faceted scorer both inside and out.
• This will be Hornets coach Steve Clifford’s first regular-season game coaching against his long-time mentor, Stan Van Gundy.
• The Hornets are trying to avoid entering the All-Star break on a three-game losing streak. The players will get a week off starting Wednesday.
• Former Charlotte Bobcat D.J. Augustin became the Pistons’ starting point guard after Brandon Jennings suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon.
• Van Gundy was hired over the summer as both coach and head of basketball operations for the Pistons.
