• The Boston Celtics just don’t draw the fans they once did at Time Warner Cable Arena. There was a decent percentage of green jerseys in the crowd, but nothing like, say, two years ago.
• Nice applause when ex-Bobcat Gerald Wallace entered the game midway through the first quarter. The Bobcats need to seriously consider retiring Wallace’s jersey someday. Yes, he said some bitter things after the trade to the Portland Trail Blazers, but he’s still the closest thing to an iconic player during the team’s first decade.
• Bobcats coach Steve Clifford was saying pre-game that the best advice he got from one of his mentors, Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, was stick to the basics on defense early, to set a “foundation” of principles before trying to add variety for special situations.
They do that, limiting baskets at the rim and getting back in transition. The next steps are to guard the 3-point line better and to have some wrinkles in the fourth quarter to deal with opposing teams’ stars.
• Wednesday’s opponent at Time Warner Cable Arena is the Indiana Pacers. So impressive how the Pacers have blended draft picks and free-agency to rebuild the past few years on the quick in a way that is sustainable.
