Hurricanes’ goaltending prospect Jeremy Helvig arrested in Florida

Jeremy Helvig, a Carolina Hurricanes goaltending prospect, was detained Thursday by police in Orange County, Florida, and faces a battery charge, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

“We are aware of the situation regarding Jeremy Helvig that took place on Thursday morning in Orlando,” Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said Thursday in a statement. “We take this situation very seriously. We will have no further comment at this time as we continue to gather information from law enforcement and await the conclusion of the legal process.”

The information posted on the Sentinel web site said Jeremy Jean Helvig, 22, faces a battery (dating violence) charge.

Helvig plays for the Greenville (S.C.) Swamp Rabbits in the ECHL and was the winning goalie Wednesday in a 7-2 win over the Orlando Solar Bears in Orlando, Fla. Helvig had 32 saves.

Helvig, a native of Markham, Ontario, was selected by the Hurricanes in the fifth round of the 2016 NHL Draft.
