Ryan signs one-year contract with Canes

The Carolina Hurricanes on Monday signed center Derek Ryan, who was named the MVP of the Swedish Hockey League last season, to a one-year, two-way contract.

The deal will pay Ryan $600,000 at the NHL level, or $150,000 at the American Hockey League level in 2015-16, with a guarantee of $185,000.

Ryan, 28, had 15 goals and 45 assists in 55 games for Orebro of the SHL in 2014-15.

“Derek is a skilled, play-making center,”general manager Ron Francis said in a statement. “He’s taken a bit of an unconventional path, but has earned a chance to play professionally in North America after having success at every level in Europe.”

The 5-10, 170-pound forward spent three seasons in the Austrian league after playing college hockey at the University of Alberta. He also played parts of four seasons with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League, the final two under current Hurricanes coach Bill Peters.
