The Canes on Friday assigned forwards Patrick Brown and Brody Sutter to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).
The team also announced forward Jeff Skinner has been removed from injured reserve.
Canes coach Bill Peters noted Brown and Sutter would be available for the Checkers' home opener Friday night against Grand Rapids, saying, "That's invaluable for them."
That left the Canes shorthanded at forward during practice Friday. Eric Staal, Pat Dwyer and Nathan Gerbe did not practice -- Gerbe left Thursday's game in New York with a lower-body injury.
Peters said he would remain optimistic that Staal might be able to rejoin the lineup and play in the second half of the Canes' four-game road trip West that begins Tuesday in Winnipeg.
Defenseman John-Michael Liles, who missed Thursday's game with an upper-body injury, skated on his own Friday and should practice Sunday, Peters said.
"We still had a good day of work," Peters said of Friday's session at PNC Arena.
Brown, 22, made his NHL debut Oct. 10 and has averaged 9:37 of ice time while playing in all four of the Hurricanes’ games this season.
Sutter, 23, made his NHL debut on Thursday in Carolina’s 2-1 shootout loss at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers.
