Beyond the blockbuster, see ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘Jaws’ and more
• The N.C. Museum of Art’s Summer Outdoor Movie series continues Saturday with Bill Condon’s 2017 fantasy musical “Beauty and the Beast” at the open-air Museum Park Theater. • Friday night, the Carolina Theatre in Durham is presenting a double feature of vintage sci-fi flicks as part of its Retroclassics series. First up, there’s Fred M. Wilcox’s “Forbidden Planet” (1956), starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and Leslie Nielsen. That’s followed by Kinji Fukasaku’s “The Green Slime” (1968), starring Robert Horton, Luciana Paluzzi and Richard Jaeckel. $9. Details: 919-560-3030 or carolinatheatre.org.

• Saturday night at The Cary, Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis’ 2017 documentary “Whose Streets?” screens at 7, followed by Joseph Cedar’s 2016 drama “Norman” at 9:30. (There will be an encore of “Whose Streets?” at 2 p.m. Sunday. Thursday, it’s Aisling Walsh’s 2016 drama “Maudie” at 2 p.m., Ericson Core’s 2015 action remake “Point Break” at 7 and Joe Dante’s 1978 sci-fi comedy “Piranha” at 9:30. ▪ As part of the Local Premiere Series, The Cary theater on Friday will host a screening of Josh Sabey’s “Going Sane.” The 2017 documentary explores the mental health system through the stories of three families dealing with the illness. A Q&A with director Sabey and the producer will follow the screening. “Going Sane” is the first of four premieres of locally made productions.
