Zombies, ghosts, George Romero and other spooky flicks highlight the weekend
On Oct. 27, The Cary theater is hosting the second annual Zombiepalooza 2017, a program of 14 local filmmakers’ zombie short films that will be shown on a huge screen in downtown Cary at 7 p.m. Back in the theater at 9:45 p.m. George A. Romero’s 1978 classic “Dawn of the Dead” continues the theme.
On Oct. 28 from 6 to 11 p.m. and Oct. 29 from 2 to 6 p.m., the Sick Chick Flicks Film Festival will take over The Cary. They’re short films from one of the following genres: Horror, Sci-Fi or Fantasy. The festival, coordinated by Apex-based filmmaker Christine Parker, focuses on female-driven independent films.
On Oct. 31, Brad Silberling’s 1995 family fantasy “Casper,” starring Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman, screens at 11 a.m. On Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. the theater is hosting the Motion for Pictures Screening Series, a program of award-winning short films from all over the world. On Nov. 2, Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles’ 2017 documentary “Nina” shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Admission is $3 to $5 for each film except for the Sick Chicks Flicks event, which is $16-$20 ($30-$35 for a two-day package). Details: 919-462-2051 or thecarytheater.com.

▪ On Oct. 27, James Gray’s 2017 historical drama “The Lost City of Z,” starring Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller, screens at the N.C. ▪ Also on Oct. 27 in Durham, the Carolina Theatre’s RetroTreasures series is presenting a double feature consisting of two ‘80s cult classics: Walter Hill’s “Streets of Fire” (1984), and Michael Schultz’s “The Last Dragon” (1985). The double bill begins at 7 p.m., and admission is $9. On Oct. 30 and 31, a new 4K restoration of George Romero’s 1968 horror classic “Night of the Living Dead” screens at 7 p.m. both nights. $9. ▪ On Oct. 30 in Durham, Duke’s Screen/Society is showing Miao Wang’s 2017 documentary “Maineland” at Richard White Auditorium as part of the Cine-East (China/USA) series at 7 p.m. On Nov. 2, the Screen/Society is hosting a screening of Fabrizio Terranova’s 2016 documentary “Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival” at Ahmadieh Family Lecture Hall, Smith Warehouse (Bay 4) at 3 p.m. A Q&A with Haraway will be held in the Jameson Gallery, Friedl Building, following the film at 6.
