Oscar contenders, Cannes winners on the big screen

On Jan. 19, the N.C. Museum of Art is presenting Juho Kuosmanen’s “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki” as part of the NCMA Arthouse Winter Films series.

The 2016 drama stars Jarkko Lahti as Olli Mäki, a famous Finnish boxer who competed in the World Boxing Association featherweight championship at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in 1962. Acclaimed by critics, the film won the Prize Un Certain Regard at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The 8 p.m. screening in the SECU Auditorium in the museum’s East Building will be introduced by John Munson, former program manager for the Rialto theater. ▪ On Jan. 19, The Cary theater is showing Agnès Varda’s 2017 documentary “Faces Places” at 7 p.m., followed by Sean Baker’s 2017 drama “The Florida Project” at 9 p.m. (There will be an encore of “Faces Places” at 2 p.m. Jan. 21.)

On Jan. 20, it’s Ron Howard’s 1985 family fantasy favorite “Cocoon” at 7 p.m. On Jan. 25, Michael Almereyda’s 2017 sci-fi drama “Marjorie Prime” screens at 2 and 7 p.m., followed by Greta Gerwig’s 2017 drama “Lady Bird” at 7 p.m. Tickets are $3-$5 for each film.
