What to Watch on Sunday: HBO debuts 'Sharp Objects,' based on book by 'Gone Girl' author

Sharp Objects (9 p.m., HBO) — Amy Adams stars in this dark and twisted limited series (based on a novel by Gillian Flynn, author of "Gone Girl") about a reporter who returns to her small Missouri hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. She finds herself identifying with the victims while also grappling with psychological puzzles from her past, mostly involving her cold mother (Patricia Clarkson). Chris Messina stars as a Kansas City detective working the case.

I’m Dying Up Here (10 p.m., Showtime) — Roy offers Eddie a big opportunity in the Season 2 finale. Also, Nick looks to make amends and Cassie struggles to decide where her loyalty lies.

Shades of Blue (10 p.m., NBC) — Harlee focuses on taking down the intelligence unity, while Espada struggles to keep secrets from Tufo.
