The second night of this season’s “The Bachelor” was the first night of “real” dates after Colton Underwood narrowed his dating pool down to 27 from 30 last week.

There were two group dates (each featuring celebrity guests), an extremely awkward one-on-one date, and some revelations about the bad blood between Miss North Carolina and Miss Alabama.

As always, we’re primarily here for our two North Carolina contestants — the 2018 Miss North Carolina USA Caelynn Miller-Keyes, and Raleigh’s Nina Bartula, a Meredith graduate and Cisco sales account manager — so that’s the main focus.

And we’ll definitely get into the pageant drama.

A few quick notes

The first group date didn’t involve either of our NC contestants, but it did feature actors and real-life married couple Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman coaching Colton and the women on how to tell stories on stage. I usually like Mullally and Offerman, but, snooze.

Pushy young Demi was rubbing some of the older women the wrong way on the first group date, and she had some catty things to say about the older women in the group. But Colton gave the date rose to one of those older women — Elyse, who is 31 to Colton’s 26 — and Demi was very upset. Like a child, she “acted out” later in the show.

Miss NC warns us about Miss Alabama

Hannah Brown (known on the show as Hannah B. because there’s another Hannah there) got the one-on-one date with Colton. Hannah B. is the 2018 Miss Alabama USA and we figured there was some history between her and Caelynn, but Caelynn filled us in.

“Hannah and I know each other and we’re not necessarily the best of friends,” she told the camera. She explained that they were roommates when they competed against each other at Miss USA and that they were “super close,” but that Hannah B. was not happy when Caelynn was named first runner up.

“For sure, there were a lot of hurt feelings,” Caelynn said. “With Hannah there’s a facade and then it starts to crumble. Hannah kind of snapped. She flipped a switch and I was like ‘whoa, that’s a whole new Hannah.’ So I think in this environment it’s pretty similar ... I have no doubt that switch will be flipped soon. It’ll happen pretty quickly.”

Meanwhile, Hannah B.’s date with Colton was extremely awkward and hard to watch. Colton even said he wasn’t sure he would give Hannah a date rose, but in the end, he did. How long will we have to wait to see Hannah’s “switch” flip? Maybe not too long at all.

THE BACHELOR - “2302” - ColtonÕs search for love starts with laughs, surprises and intense face-offs between the women. The first date of the season has eight hopeful bachelorettes sharing personal stories about their “firsts” - with Colton and a live audience Ð and coached by happily married masters of comedy Megan Mullally (”Will & Grace”) and Nick Offerman (”Parks and Recreation”). Hannah B. scores the first one-on-one date on her birthday, including dinner on The Queen Mary. Twelve eager women attend “Camp Bachelor” with a decidedly unorthodox camp counselor, actor and comedian Billy Eichner, who oversees three challenging contests. However, some ill-timed drama the night of the rose ceremony might lead to certain ladies being left without a rose on “The Bachelor,” MONDAY, JAN. 14 (8:00-10:00 p.m. EST), on The ABC Television Network. Battle at Camp Bachelor

The second group date had both Caelynn and Nina at a summer camp with Colton and celebrity actor/comedian Billy Eichner (“Billy on the Street”). They played touch football, badminton and corn hole.

Caelynn noted right away that Colton was grilling and that it was a “hot dad moment.”

After some games, Billy Eichner showed up with host Chris Harrison, and Harrison explained that the women would split into two teams for a competition. He said the losing team had to go home and the winning team got to camp out overnight “under the stars” with Colton.

They played a lot of camp style games, like three-legged races and canoe races. Caelynn was on the Red team and Nina was on the Yellow Team. Red won the first contest and Yellow won the second. The tie-breaker was a tug-of-war, and the Red Team pulled it out. Nina was upset and told the camera: “The worst part is not getting to spend the rest of the night with him and establish connections with him, because I feel like I don’t really have those connections, and it just sucks.”

Miss Alabama calls Miss North Carolina ‘fake’

While Caelynn was with the other women and Colton at sleepaway camp, Hannah B. was obsessing over how once again, Miss North Carolina may best her.

“I’m not happy that Caelynn is getting time with Colton,” Hannah B. told the camera. “If I start thinking about it I’ll turn into a crazy person.”

Then we see Hannah B. whispering to Cassie (the show very kindly provided subtitles): “It’s just so funny because there’s not one person in the world that I have a problem with, except her.”

Talking to the camera: “I think I definitely have insight into what kind of person she is. She’s fake.”

Whispering to Cassie: “It totally scares me for Colton.”

To the camera, Hannah B. said her relationship was “solidified” with Colton on their date (ummm...) but now she’s scared that Caelynn is going to say something to Colton about her to “screw it up.”

Caelynn did have some one-on-one time with Colton, but Hannah B. was not the topic of conversation. In their personal chat, Caelynn told Colton about having encephalitis when she was two years old and how she almost died in the hospital. Colton talked about how he always tried to spend time with kids in hospitals. Then they smooched.

Caelynn did not get the group date rose — Never Been Kissed Heather got it — and Caelynn admitted that it “stung a little.”

Cocktail party drama

There was some serious jockeying for Colton’s time at the cocktail party, particularly by the women who hadn’t spent time with him. Nina did get some time with him. She told him she’s looking for a best friend, someone she can have fun with.

Sydney and Onyeka had a little back-and-forth fighting over time with Colton, Onyeka interrupting Sydney with an air horn and Sydney coming back out banging on pots. Onyeka did what I’ve always wanted a woman to do when another woman comes out with that “can I steal you?” bit: she said “I’m not leaving.”

Demi, the youngster upset at not getting the date rose earlier, showed up at the cocktail party in a bathrobe and interrupted Tracy, who had clashed with her earlier. Demi then took Colton upstairs to her room and gave him a massage. Everyone agreed it was Not Appropriate.”

Demi came downstairs and announced to everyone that she’d had an amazing time with Colton upstairs. She said “the cougar attacks” do not bother her. Meanwhile, Tracy cried in her room.

Who didn’t get a rose?

Caelynn and Nina are both safe.

Angelique, Annie, Alex B. and Erika McNutt did not get roses.

Personally very sad to lose McNutt, who was pretty funny. I guess when Colton asked her if she wanted kids and she said that for now she’s happy with a bunch of dogs, that was the wrong answer.

Next week

The previews indicate some more Miss North Carolina vs. Miss Alabama drama.

The show airs at 8 p.m. Mondays on ABC.
