Love is in the air with ‘An Affair to Affair’ and other romantic films on screen

On Feb. 18, the Rialto Theatre in Raleigh is presenting Leo McCarey’s “An Affair to Remember” as part of the Monday at the Movies series. The 1957 romantic, about a couple who fall in love and agree to meet in six months at the Empire State Building, stars Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr and Richard Denning. The film was nominated for Academy Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Score and Best Original Song.

A remake of McCarey’s “Love Affair” (1939), the film was heavily referred to in Nora Ephron’s 1989 rom-com “When Harry Met Sally.” “An Affair to Remember” was remade itself in 1994, reverting back to the title, “Love Affair,” starring Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. 7 p.m. $5. Feb. 15, the N.C. Museum of Art’s Winter Film Series continues with George Cukor’s 1931 comedy “Girls About Town,” starring Kay Francis, Lilyan Tashman and Joel McCrea. NCMA Film Curator Laura Boyes introduces the screening at the SECU Auditorium in the East Building. 8 p.m. $5 ($7 for museum members).

Feb. 15, the Cary Theater is showing Marielle Heller’s 2018 drama “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” at 7 p.m., followed by Bryan Singer’s Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” at 9:15 p.m. (There will be encores of both films on Feb. 16 at the same times).

Feb. 19, The Cary hosts “Rough Cuts Review,” an open screen night for North Carolina filmmakers, at 7. Feb. 21, Blake Edwards’ 1961 classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” screens at 2 p.m., followed by two John Hughes movies: the 1984 teen rom-com “Sixteen Candles” at 7 p.m., and the 1989 comedy “Uncle Buck” at 9 p.m.

Feb. 15, the Carolina Theatre in Durham is offering a double feature consisting of two ‘80s teen rom-coms: Howard Deutch’s “Pretty in Pink” (1986), followed by Martha Coolidge’s “Valley Girl” (1983).

Feb. 18-20, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will be hosting Movie Parties for Mike Judge’s 1999 comedy “Office Space.” Also Feb. 18, it’s Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 action thriller “Point Break.” Feb. 19, Ronny Yu’s 1998 horror comedy “Bride of Chucky” shows as part of the Terror Tuesday series. Feb. 20, Weird Wednesday is featuring Oliver Stone’s 1994 crime drama “Natural Born Killers.” Feb. 21, Ernest R. Dickerson’s 1992 crime drama “Juice” screens as part of the Protect Ya Neck: Heavyweight Hip-Hop Classics from the ‘90s series, co-presented by the award-winning hip hop duo, Riders Against the Storm.
