Ariana DeBose Awards Watch: BAFTA & Critics Choice wins added to trophy pile

It has turned out to be a very busy awards season for North Carolina native Ariana DeBose.

DeBose, known for her stage work in “Hamilton” and “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” stars in the new Steven Spielberg film “West Side Story,” a remake of the Oscar-winning 1961 musical. DeBose plays Anita, a role for which Rita Moreno won an Oscar in 1962.

On Sunday, March 13, DeBose was named Best Supporting Actress by both the British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) and the American-Canadian Critics Choice Association (Critic’s Choice).

She has also snagged honors this year from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Screen Actors Guild.

And DeBose’s pile of trophies could grow even larger. She is also nominated for an Academy Award.

If she wins the Oscar, she’ll be the first queer woman of color to take the prize. And it would also be only the third time that an actor won an Oscar for playing the same character that a different actor also won for.

The singer/dancer/actress, who starred in the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series “Schmigadoon” last year, also hosted “Saturday Night Live” on Jan. 15, the show’s first new episode of 2022.

DeBose tweeted her appreciation, while also acknowledging recent HFPA scandals: “There is still work to be done, but when you’ve worked so hard on a project — infused with blood, sweat, tears and love — having the work seen and acknowledged is always going to be special. Thank you.”

Screen Actors Guild Awards? WON: DeBose was announced as a nominee in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role category on Jan. 12, and was announced as the winner during a broadcast on TNT and TBS on Feb. 27.

BAFTA Awards? WON: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominated DeBose in the Best Supporting Actress category and for the Rising Star award. At the March 13 ceremony in London, DeBose won the Best Supporting Actress award but not the Rising Star award.

At Sunday’s BAFTA ceremony, in addition to her on-screen performance, DeBose drew praise for her bright yellow Oscar de la Renta gown, which was an homage to the yellow dress she wore in the street dance in “West Side Story.”

Critics Choice Awards? WON: These awards were originally scheduled to be handed out on Jan. 9, the same evening as the Golden Globes, but the ceremony was postponed until March 13, because of COVID. DeBose accepted her Best Supporting Actress award and made a speech live via satellite from London, where she was attending the BAFTA Awards ceremony.

Academy Awards? NOMINATED: DeBose was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category on Feb. 8. The ceremony airs on ABC on March 27.
