This 1969 Rock Classic Hit No. 1 - But It Was a Cover

It's unsurprising that Elvis Presley, AKA the King of Rock and Roll, has dozens of rock hits. However, some fans might not realize that a few of his most famous and beloved works weren't originals.

For instance, his 1969 song, "Suspicious Minds," which reached the number 1 Billboard's Hot 100 spot during November 1969, was written by Mark James, who released his original take on the classic in 1968, as reported by American Songwriter.

Mark James Discussed Writing 'Suspicious Minds' in a 2014 Interview

In a 2014 red carpet interview with Artisan News, James discussed writing Presley's big hit before being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

"I wrote it for myself years ago. I had a record out in '68. Same arrangement," said James. "And so that's why I use the same arrangement hoping [Presley would] do the same thing and make it greater when he came in American Studios."

According to James, he "knew the song was perfect for" Presley, who was 42 when he died in 1977.

While speaking to Artisan News, James also shared his thoughts about the lasting legacy of "Suspicious Minds."

"I'm really honored about that. Matter of fact, 'Suspicious Minds' is now the all-time biggest single ever of Elvis Presley. That's a great honor. Yeah, Elvis had a lot of great songs," said the "Always on My Mind" songwriter, who died in 2024 at the age of 83.

Mark James Said He Appreciated Elvis Presley's Take on 'Suspicious Minds'

While speaking on stage before an audience in 2021, James said he appreciated Presley's take on "Suspicious Minds."

"The bottom line is yeah, they did record it. They tried to make it greater and they did, providing Elvis would sing it, and get a great performance and he did," said James while holding a microphone.

James also said the success of Presley's recording benefited him.

"It was number one in 27 countries and Elvis was on top again and so was I," said James with a laugh.
