'90s Hit Television Crime Show Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 33 Years After Its Release
Homicide: Life on the Street made its mark in television history as one of the hit crime classics in the 1990s.
Thirty years after the show's debut, the NBC series is finding a new life in the streaming era.
While Netflix and Amazon Prime dominated the streaming landscape with a steady wave of original series and movies, the underrated platform Peacock is quietly making its own space, giving viewers a rich mix of content ranging from classic favorites to fresh gems.
In a list released by TV Guide, the rankings include the 46 best shows on Peacock as of April 2026.
The lineup is a mix of expert opinion, up-to-date relevance and personal recommendations based on the curator's own viewing preferences.
Homicide: Life on the Street earned a spot on the list of the "best shows," securing its place among the standout series on the platform.
Moreover, the series, which was recently added on Peacock, was recommended for fans who love "great acting and classic television."
TV Guide praised the crime series for the quality of the storytelling, highlighting how it elevates the material despite its conventional format.
"The characters are brilliantly observed and brought to life by incredible performers like Melissa Leo and the late, great Andre Braugher," the outlet added, further commending its lead stars.
Based on the nonfiction book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, written by David Simon, the crime drama series centers around the reality of the police force, featuring Detective Frank Pembleton, the brilliant yet intense master of the interrogation room, played by the late Andre Braugher, alongside his partner Meldrick Lewis, the street-smart detective portrayed by Clark Johnson.
Following the actor's death in 2023, the show's former executive producer Barry Levinson described Braugher as "one of the really exceptional actors" he had worked with.
"What is interesting is that as an actor, he almost invariably exceeded what you thought you might get," he told People, adding, "That's what was, I think, unique about him in his very simple way without a lot of to-do. He delivered and exceeded your expectations."
Following the show's debut on January 31, 1993, Homicide: Life on the Street ran from seven seasons, totaling 122 episodes until its finale in 1999.
For years, viewers followed a group of detectives in Baltimore, Maryland as they navigate the challenges of their city while balancing their personal lives.
With Homicide: Life on the Street reclaiming the chart again after 33 years, it only further proves the enduring strength of its legacy.
