2010s Hit Video-Sharing App Was Short-Lived - But Just Relaunched to Battle AI

How does "short and sweet" sound? When it comes to media, that's probably why a certain video-sharing app thrived in the previous decade.

Vine virtually paved the way for modern-day platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Once sold to Twitter, however, it closed down for good four years after launching. But now, it's back - sort of.

Backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, the new version is called Divine. Fans of the nostalgic Vine app can join in on the fun right now - especially if they've "had it up to here" with the overwhelming presence of artificial intelligence on the other social-media platforms holding real estate on their smartphones.

That's right - Divine comes with a strict rule: The videos have to be made by people, not machines. As our feeds continue to fill up with low-grade "AI slop," this component might come as a breath of fresh air for consumers.

Meanwhile, Divine keeps the six-second limit that was trademark of Vine. And according to The Guardian, it's actually hosting roughly 500,000 old clips that might just bring you down memory lane.

On that note, check out an "iconic, legendary" Vine compilation below.

The Divine project has been spearheaded by Evan Henshaw-Plath - AKA "Rabble" - a former Twitter employee who wanted to give old Vines a permanent home.

"Divine began as a personal project to reconnect with a time when the internet felt creative, open, and unquestionably human," Henshaw-Plath told The Guardian in an article published Monday, May 4. "The overwhelming response we got to our initial announcement has turned my side project into more of a movement. The app launch is less about nostalgia, and more an antidote to what social media has become."

To ensure that no AI-generated content goes live on the app, Divine makes users either record videos directly on the app or verify them as human-made using a verification tool. Well, what are you waiting for?
