Shonda Rhimes Reacts to Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver's ‘Grey's Anatomy' Exit

Shonda Rhimes shared an emotional tribute to Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver as they departed "Grey's Anatomy" in the season 22 finale.

"Tonight, as we close this chapter of ‘Grey's Anatomy,' I'm filled with gratitude for everything these two characters have meant to the show and to the fans who grew alongside them," the show creator, 56, shared on Instagram, referring to McKidd's Owen Hunt and Raver's Teddy Altman.

She praised the stars for giving the characters "depth, humanity, and a chemistry that made every moment feel real."

The couple experienced many ups and downs after getting together in season 14 of the long-running ABC medical drama. Reflecting on their journey, Rhimes shared, "Through every heartbreak, every setback, every fight, and every reconciliation, they reminded us that love is rarely perfect… but it's passionate, it's real, and sometimes the most complicated journeys lead us exactly where we're meant to be."

"Thank you for every unforgettable scene, every tear, every triumph, and every piece of your hearts you gave to Grey Sloan," she concluded.

McKidd, 52, and Raver, 57, bid farewell to "Grey's Anatomy" on the season 22 finale on May 7.

In the episode, Owen escaped his car following a bridge collapse and sprang into action to help a family of four get out of harm's way. He later reunited with his ex, Teddy, after the two had recently argued over her new job opportunity in Paris.

Teddy ultimately declared her love for him and made it clear she would choose him over Paris, saying, "I choose us. I needed some time to figure out what I wanted for myself, and what I want is you and our kids. I want us."

"I’m not going to go to Paris. I have lived all over the world, and the only thing that makes me feel like home is you," she continued.

Owen then declared that he and kids would make the move to Paris alongside her, explaining, "I have spent my whole life chasing adventure, but the best thing I've ever done is our family. I would do anything for the three of you. You're my life."

News of McKidd and Raver's departures from "Grey's Anatomy" came in March.

"Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen - two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other," Rhimes told Deadline at the time. "It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves."

Kevin McKidd first appeared on "Grey's Anatomy" in 2008 during season 5, and Kim Raver joined the series in season 6 the following year.

"Grey's Anatomy" is available to stream on Hulu.
