1983 Soft Rock Anthem, Originally Written as a Joke, Became a No. 1 Hit

In 1983, a Lionel Richie song semi-comprised of lyrics that aren't even real words took the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100-and remained at No. 1 for four weeks.

The former Commodores frontman had set out to create a song that would become an international dance sensation, and while he ended up achieving the goal, he has long admitted that some of the track's words had silly beginnings-what he described as a "wonderful joke."

Six-and-a-half minutes of infectious make-your-body-move music, "All Night Long (All Night)," from his second solo album, Can't Slow Down, quickly became a smash hit-but it wasn't the quickest to come together. "It was the first time I've ever written a song where I didn't have a hook. It took me months to find one," he told TheNew York Post in 2013.

In a 2019 video with GQ, the legendary hitmaker shared the true story behind how he landed on the finishing touches of the song. "I don't have a hook," he said of realizing the track was missing something at the time. "It took me probably another month of just walking around my house and everywhere, trying to figure out, 'What is the hook to come on and sing along?' I've got to give you a sing-along."

The epiphany came to him after a visit with a Jamaican friend, following weeks of struggling to figure out what his hook would be for the rhythmic jam. He recalled pulling off a faux Caribbean accent as he was leaving his pal's home, saying he'd be going home to work on the song "all night long."

"Then I said, ‘Wait a minute. "All Night Long."' He looked at me like I was nuts. Sometimes, by not thinking, you find exactly what you want," Richie added to NYP.

Then, the sounds he came upon after the chorus chants, "Come on and sing along"-some of which aren't actual words at all-resulted in the bridge: "Say, tam bo li de say de moi ya, your turn! / (Yeah, Jambo, Jambo) I say / Way to parti, o we goin', your turn!"

"That is a wonderful joke," he admitted of the lyrics. And as the music icon explained to GQ, the rest is history.

One of the Greatest of All Time

More than four decades after it first climbed the charts, "All Night Long (All Night)" remains a timeless anthem. The feel-good dance track was ranked among Amazon Music's 100 Greatest Soft Rock Songsof All Time, coming in at No. 25 on the expansive list.

More hits that made the cut include Rupert Holmes‘ "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)"-which was also ranked among Best Beach Songs of All Time-"Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond, Billy Joel‘s "Piano Man," entries from the great Hall & Oates, Air Supply's "All Out of Love," and many more. Taking the crown for the No. 1 Greatest Soft Rock Song of All Time on the list is Toto‘s "Africa" (1982).
