1965 Rock Classic From a No. 1 Album Has Disturbing Lyrics

Overall, the beloved band The Beatles is known for songs that evoke images of peace, love, and friendship, like "A Little Help From My Friends," "In My Life," and "All You Need Is Love." However, in May 2026, American Songwriter reported that the 1965 Beatles' song, "Run For Your Life," off the Rubber Soul record, has some unexpectedly dark lyrics.

The publication named the John Lennon-penned track as being among "the 4 classic songs [that] are seriously disturbing." According to the publication, the tune depicts an unwell narrator promising he'll murder his romantic interest in a scenario where she decides to date someone else.

John Lennon Discussed 'Run for Your Life' in a 1971 Interview

In a 1971 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Lennon shared that he wasn't all that fond of "Run for Your Life." According to the late musician, who died in 1980 at the age of 40, he didn't put much thought into writing the song, which was partly inspired by Elvis Presley's 1957 track, "Baby Let's Play House."

"From the same period, same time, I never liked 'Run For Your Life,' because it was a song I just knocked off. It was inspired from – this is a very vague connection – from 'Baby Let's Play House.' There was a line on it – I used to like specific lines from songs – "I'd rather see you dead, little girl, than to be with another man" – so I wrote it around that but I didn't think it was that important," said Lennon to the publication.

While speaking to Rolling Stone, Lennon said he was happy with the song, "Girl," also from Rubber Soul, which became a No. 1 record in 1966, as reported by the official The Beatles Store.

"Girl' I liked because I was, in a way, trying to say something or other about Christianity which I was opposed to at the time," said Lennon in the interview.

Lennon then explained that the song deals with "sort of the Catholic Christian concept – be tortured and then it'll be alright, which seems to be a bit true but not in their concept of it."

"But I didn't believe in that, that you have to be tortured to attain anything, it just so happens that you were," continued Lennon.
