'Grey's Anatomy' Gets an 'Edgy' Spin-Off & Fans Have a Theory
The drama at the Seattle hospital in Grey's Anatomy will continue in the upcoming season 23. It's a huge feat considering the original show outlasted the spin-off, Private Practice, which took place in Los Angeles.
The firefighter spin-off Station 19 is still going strong, and now there is a new show set in the Grey's Anatomy universe in a different state.
Why 'Grey's Anatomy' Fans Think Levi Will Be in the Spin-Off
ABC is adding a new medical show for the 2026-2027 season, according to Variety. Shonda Rhimesis co-creator with showrunner Meg Marinis. Ellen Pompeo will act as executive producer.

The new series doesn't have a title yet, but is described as "an edgy drama about a team at a West Texas rural medical center - the last chance for care before miles of nowhere." It's unclear which, if any, Grey's Anatomy characters will be at the center of the show.
The idea somewhat follows the trend of successful Western shows on cable. Yellowstonehas wrapped up, and the spin-offs, Dutton Ranch and Marshals, further the characters' stories. The rural setting is a change of pace for the Grey's Anatomy universe, which has been set in cities.
The major update comes after season 22's finale. The episode was Owen Hunt's (Kevin McKidd) and Teddy Altman's (Kim Raver) last episode. McKidd said he felt like it was time to leave the character after his introduction in season 5.
Fans reacted to the news under Rhimes' Instagram post. They already have a theory about the show's characters. "Soooo Levi is back?" one fan asked. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) left Seattle for Texas for a research position, and hopefully will go into peds afterward. His boyfriend, James Morgan (Michael Thomas Grant), joined him for the new adventure.
Fans will have to wait to see if their theory is correct.
