On This Day in 1956, Rock 'n' Roll Music is Banned For the First Time Ever: 'Detrimental to the Health and Morals of Our Community'

Hard as it might be to believe, rock and roll wasn't always the beloved musical genre known throughout the world today.

In fact, on this exact date 70 years ago, the first of many official bans of the rock music came to fruition, illustrating the music genre's initially controversial nature back in the mid 1950s.

According to History.com, the country's first ban on rock music came about on June 3, 1956 in Santa Cruz, California. The ban specifically applied to any musical rock gatherings, which were viewed at the time as "detrimental to both the health and morals of our youth and community."

The first of many bans against rock music initially came as a direct result of a dance party that took place at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium in the Golden State. At the time, over 200 teenagers attended the Saturday night event, which featured the rock music of Los Angeles band Chuck Higgins and his Orchestra.

When Santa Cruz's police department checked on the event sometime after midnight, police Lieutenant Richard Overton said they found a crowd of teens "engaged in suggestive, stimulating and tantalizing motions induced by the provocative rhythms."

In response, Overton promptly shut down the dance, forcing the teens to go home and Chuck Higgins and his Orchestra to pack up for the night. Following the event, the city of Santa Cruz issue a formal ban on "Rock-and-roll and other forms of frenzied music": the first of its kind in the country.

In the weeks that followed, Asbury Park, New Jersey and San Antonio, Texas promptly followed suit, leading to renewed controversy over the burgeoning popularity surrounding rock music.

As it happened, the ban did little to prevent the genre from reaching its peak throughout the remainder of the decade, with rock and roll soon becoming a cornerstone of the music industry by the end of the 1950s.
