Netflix Working on Sequel to Wildly Popular 'War Machine' Movie

Only a few short months after its successful debut on Netflix, Variety reports that the popular streaming service is developing a sequel to its action thriller, War Machine.

A pulse-pounding sci-fi thriller with shades of Predator, Netflix's War Machine follows a group of soldiers attempting to survive against an unstoppable killing machine that crash lands in the middle of a training exercise.

Starring Alan Ritchson, Dennis Quaid, Stephan King James, Jai Courtney and Esai Morales, War Machine earned mostly positively reviews from critics upon its initial debut on Netflix back in March, with many calling it an old-school thriller that delivered a healthy array of action sequences.

"It can feel like a powder keg taking too long to explode at times, and visually it's flavorless, but the charisma of Alan Ritchson carries it across the finish line like a wounded brother in arms," wrote IGN.

"A brainless, bombastic, bomb-tastic action romp, this is absurd on almost every level, and far more fun than it has any right to be," agreed Empire magazine.

In addition to its warm reviews, the movie wound up performing remarkably well as one of Netflix's most-streamed original movies, earning a whopping 139 million views. Because of this, the streamer has been actively mapping out plans for a sequel continuation to the film.

Per Variety, director Patrick Hughes (The Hitman's Bodyguard) will return to oversee the sequel, as well as serving as the movie's co-writer alongside James Beaufort. Hughes will also serve as producer alongside Todd Lieberman and Alex Young through Hidden Pictures and Range Media Partners' Rich Cook.

As of yet, it's not quite clear whether any of the movie's original cast (including main star Ritchson) will return for the sequel, with the movie's ending concluding a fairly ambiguous note. It's also not currently known when the sequel might arrive to the streaming provider.
