'60s Rock Band Announces Major Milestone With Special Message
Fresh off a major accomplishment, The Zombies delivered a heartfelt message to fans after a 1965 banger reached a milestone.
Originally formed as a five-piece in 1961, they cemented their name in the music industry with their unique approach to music and their interesting band name.
"I always think it came out of desperation, actually," frontman Colin Blunstone told Gold Radio about how The Zombies emerged. "It sounds so trivial, but a band needs a name. We were desperately trying to think of a name. For about a week, we were The Mustangs. We realised there were hundreds of Mustangs."
According to him, the initial option was The Sundowners but it only "lasted a week," and they changed it to their current name.
"And then one guy just suddenly said, The Zombies," he recalled, adding, "And it just stuck. And to this day, I've got to be honest, certainly then, I had no idea what a zombie was. And if I might give away a little secret, I don't really know what a zombie is now. But the name stuck. It's very memorable. And so The Zombies it was."
Their sound was a blend of jazz-inflected and psychedelic pop-rock, infused with intricate vocal harmonies that made listeners easily drawn to their music.
During the 1960s, when British Invasion acts and pop-rock bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys dominated the music charts, The Zombies carved out their own distinctive place in the industry with one of their signature hits, "She's Not There."
Released in 1964 as their debut single, it became a massive breakout hit that helped the band score a No. 2 spot on the United States Billboard Hot 100 and reach No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart.
Sixty-two years later, The Zombies are experiencing almost the same feeling after "She's Not There" reached 1 million streams on the streaming service Pandora.
Announcing the milestone on social media, the band's official Instagram account shared a heartfelt message, expressing its gratitude to the fans who helped make it possible.
"A huge thank you to everyone listening to The Zombies on Pandora. We've just reached 1 million streams and we couldn't have done it without your continued love and support through all these years," the caption reads.
The comment section was flooded with congratulatory messages and sweet reactions from fans, many saying the band truly deserved the achievement.
"I'm in my early 30s, and you're absolutely in my top 10 musical artists. It was such a joy seeing you perform in Portland a few years ago. This music will never tire," one wrote.
"Zombie fans know what they love and show it. Congrats guys," a commenter said.
"2.000.000 next step!!!" a follower manifested.
"Amazing, Amazing news!!!" a fan echoed.
The Zombies, whose original members were Colin Blunstone on lead vocals, Rod Argent on keyboards, Paul Atkinson on guitar, Chris White on bass and Hugh Grundy on drums, celebrated their 60th anniversary with a successful tour.
The 60 Years On Tape tour kicked off in Brighton, East Sussex, in May 2024, with performances in several cities before concluding at the Eden Festival on June 15 of the same year.
