Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin Brings the Darkest Ninja Turtle Story Yet to Video Games

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have starred in countless cartoons, comics, films, and video games over the past four decades. Most versions of the heroes in a half shell focus on teamwork, humor, and colorful adventures. The Last Ronin is different.

Recently revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026, The Last Ronin is being developed by PlatinumGames, the studio known for titles such as Bayonetta and NieR: Automata. While very little has been revealed about the game's mechanics, story adaptations, or release plans, one thing is clear: it is based on one of the most acclaimed and tragic stories ever published in the TMNT universe.

Who Is The Last Ronin?

The Last Ronin is a comic book series created by TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird alongside writer Tom Waltz. The story takes place in a dark future version of New York City where only one of the four Turtle brothers remains alive.

The surviving Turtle embarks on a mission of revenge against the forces responsible for the deaths of his family. Rather than focusing on the lighthearted tone associated with many TMNT adaptations, the comic explores grief, loss, guilt, and the consequences of decades of conflict. He's even shown in the latest Magic: The Gathering expansion about the TMNT universe.

One of the reasons the original comic became so popular was the mystery surrounding Ronin's identity; early chapters deliberately concealed which Turtle had survived. Because that reveal remains an important part of the comic's narrative, many official descriptions of the game continue to avoid naming the character directly.

The story's setting is equally bleak. New York has fallen under the control of the grandson of the Shredder, and the lone surviving Turtle finds himself fighting a seemingly impossible battle against overwhelming odds. The result is a version of the TMNT universe that feels much closer to a dystopian action drama than a traditional superhero adventure.

With PlatinumGames handling the adaptation, fans are eager to see how one of the darkest TMNT stories ever told translates into an interactive experience. For now, many details remain a mystery, but the premise alone has already made The Last Ronin one of the most anticipated licensed games currently in development.
