Iconic '80s Adventure Classic Is Streaming for Free 41 Years After Release
The 1980s saw the release of many memorable movies that would go on to earn legendary status among film lovers of all ages. One of those movies? The Goonies, a beloved family favorite that is now regarded as a cult classic. Released on June 7, 1985, The Goonies starsSean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Jeff Cohen, Anne Ramsay, and Kerri Green, as well as Oscar nominee Josh Brolin and Oscar winner Jonathan Ke Quan as a group of misfit kids who stumble upon an old treasure map and embark on an adventure of a lifetime to uncover a pirate's treasure. The film was directed by Richard Donner and is based on a story by Steven Spielberg.
Upon its theatrical release, the nostalgic film brought in over $65 million against a $19 million and went on to win multiple awards. In 1986, Astin won the award for "Best Starring Performance by a Young Actor in a Motion Picture" at the Young Artist Awards, while Ramsay took home "Best Supporting Actress" at the Saturn Awards. 2017 saw the much-loved movie be selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
In 2025, the cast reunited for the film's 40th anniversary, and their bond was still as tight as it was four decades earlier.
"We really were like a family," Green told TODAY in an interview. "A big dysfunctional, but loving, family. It was such an important time for all of us, it was such an important period of the age that we were at. We really grew up together."
