'90s Rock Band Cancels Show After Frontman Is Hospitalized
The Flaming Lips were forced to cancel their Vienna concert after frontman Wayne Coyne was hospitalized and put on bed rest.
The psychedelic rock band, known for hits like "Do You Realize??" and "She Don't Use Jelly", took to Instagram on Monday, June 15, to announce that their show scheduled for that night in Austria would not be going forward as planned due to Coyne's health scare.
"We are truly sorry, Vienna, but our show tonight at Gasometer is cancelled. Wayne has pneumonia and has been ordered to bed rest. All refunds will be available from your point of purchase," they wrote. "We hope to see you again, Austria!"
Alongside the announcement, the band included a photo of masked Coyne reclining in a hospital bed while attached to numerous monitors.
The band, which also includes Derek Brown, Matt Duckworth Kirksey, Tommy McKenzie and AJ Slaughter, is currently in the middle of a U.K. and European tour and is scheduled to travel across 11 countries this summer.
As of Tuesday, June 16, the band has not provided any additional updates on the tour schedule. The Flaming Lips are next scheduled to hit the stage on Thursday, June 18, at the Bonsai Garden in Bologna, Italy. They're then slated to play concerts in Prague, Belgrade, Zagreb, and Kallithéa before heading to the U.K. and Ireland next month.
Fans of The Flaming Lips were quick to wish Coyne a quick recovery in the comment section of the band's announcement. "Take good care, Wayne!" one person wrote. "Please take it slow & steady to allow for proper healing/recovery." Another person added, "Oh dear Wayne, rest is normally not something in your busy life but please rest and recover soon! Your health is most important!"
A third chimed in that the photo of Coyne in the hospital was "scary" to see, calling him "one of the hardest working, most inspiring people in the universe." They went on, "So get some rest man, it's well earned!!! we love you."
