Is ‘Doctor Who' Canceled? The BBC's Official Update Explained
Last week, the BBC announced it’s officially canceling the “Doctor Who” 2026 Christmas special.
Now, the former showrunner of the long-running sci-fi series is downplaying fears the entire show is about to bite the bullet.
“Doctor Who has not been canceled,” Steven Moffat said at the Utopia 2026 convention over the weekend. “Yes, Christmas has been canceled. Well, to be clear, not all of Christmas, the day will still take place, even if Doctor Who’s not on it.”
“I don’t like the fact there’s not gonna be a Christmas special,” Moffat continued. “There should always be a Christmas special. There’s not going to be that, but the show will return – very, very definitely.”
Moffat’s quotes follow a statement made by the BBC on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. It reads: “As part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations, and in line with the BBC's Charter and Agreement requirements, the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year.”
“After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode.”
The Christmas episode was announced last year, with fans eagerly awaiting what is now a series tradition. The BBC, however, clarified it’s in no way looking to axe the show entirely.
“This decision was not taken lightly,” the statement continues, “and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory.”
So, according to the BBC, the canning of the Christmas episode is far from a worrying sign. In fact, fans should see it as a positive. This is how the BBC is ensuring one of its flagship shows endures. Despite this, many are understandably confused by the BBC’s terminology.
What Does ‘Being Put Out to Competitve Tender’ Mean?
The BBC has stated it “will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year.” Essentially, this means the corporation is attempting to find a new production company for it. This usually happens when IP holders decide a show needs an injection of fresh ideas and new talent.
