Fans React to Tom Holland's Pick for the Next Spider-Man
Fans are weighing in after Tom Holland revealed his pick for the next Spider-Man.
Holland - who is set to reprise his role as Spider-Man in the highly anticipated movie “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” - revealed to Esquire his pick for who should take over the role.
"In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next," he said of the actor, who starred as Iron Man alongside Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As for who Holland, 30, would pick to step into the suit and be his successor, he shared, "Owen Cooper would be awesome.”
"Obviously he's super-talented and the talk of the town right now,” he added of Cooper, 16, who earned acclaim for his role on Netflix’s “Adolescence.”
Cooper won Best Supporting Actor at the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, British Academy Television Awards and Emmys for his performance in a limited series.
Fans to took to social media to share their thoughts about Holland’s selection with one fan writing, “Owen Cooper was phenomenal in Adolescence. He absolutely has the acting chops for Peter Parker.”
“If Marvel actually pulls the trigger on this, the casting would be absolutely elite,” another fan shared.
“Tom Holland already thinking about the future-classy move. Owen Cooper is the hot name right now, and Holland’s endorsement carries weight. Passing the torch with grace,” another message read.
However, not everyone was ready to see Holland move on the role, which he has played since “Captain America: Civil War” in 2016.
“Tom Holland out here doing God's work by naming his successor Owen Cooper as the next Spider-Man? I see the vision but I'm still not ready to say goodbye to Tom's Peter Parker,” a fan posted.
Holland previously discussed his hopes for the future of the franchise in an interview with Empire earlier this month.
"For whoever's next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter," he shared.
"Whatever that looks like, I don't know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset," he added.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" premieres on July 31.
