R-Type Tactics I And II Are Finally On Modern Consoles

R-Type Tactics I and II are on modern hardware for the first time. NIS America released R-Type Tactics I and II Cosmos on Thursday, bringing both classic turn-based strategy titles to Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam as a single compilation package.

The original games were PSP exclusives that never made the jump West. For many, this is the first accessible look at R-Type Tactics. It's a significantly different experience from the series' main shoot-em-up line, so R-Type fans who have never seen this side of the series should not miss.

Two Campaigns, One Package

R-Type Tactics I and II Cosmos includes multiple campaigns across both games. The standard mode places you against the Bydo Empire in a classic space opera story: humanity's last defense against a force that does not understand mercy. The alternate campaign flips that entirely, letting you play as the Bydo themselves. Playing as the Bydo reframes the entire conflict in ways the main series never got to explore.

The compilation spans dozens of levels with a full lineup of unique units to deploy. Fans of the mainline R-Type games will recognize the ship designs throughout; the tactics layer is what makes the experience much different from a standard run through the series.

Two free DLC packs are also confirmed for all platforms on June 29: the Unit Color Variation Fighter Pack and Unit: ARROW-HEAD G (GRA Ver.). No additional purchase required on any platform.
