Soulbound's Steam Next Fest Demo Is Live Now With Over 7 Hours Of Content Before July 21 Release

Soulbound has a Steam Next Fest demo live right now, and it's not a short one. Developer Spiderware is offering more than seven hours of playable content in the demo for its pixel art MMORPG, which has already built a community of over one million players entirely through browser and Discord before its Steam arrival.

When Spiderware announced the Steam release, Soulbound won Discord's Adventure Together App Pitch 2024 and built its entire player base outside of the standard game distribution pipeline. The Steam Next Fest demo is the first opportunity for players who missed the browser and Discord versions to try the game before its full release on July 21.

ICYMI: What Is Soulbound?

Soulbound is a full MMORPG rendered in vibrant pixel art, set inside a colorful digital reality where players build custom characters, form guilds, and fight against malevolent entities called the Anima. It isn't a demo experience designed around a vertical slice: the game has been running as a live product inside Discord and browsers for long enough that it has a large and active playerbase and a world that's been built up by its community.

Seven-plus hours in a demo means you can get your toes wet before deciding to purchase the game in full, which is a bold choice for Spiderware. The devs are not worried about the game losing appeal before players finish the preview. They strongly believe in their game that they feel the seven hours people will pour into the demo will get them attached by the time the game launches in full next month.

The Discord-to-Steam Path

Soulbound's development approach is a fun one. Building a full MMO inside Discord first, winning a major visibility grant through the App Pitch competition, and then porting to Steam with one million existing players already in the community is a unique strategy that I don't think I've seen before (send me other examples, if you know any). The audience arriving on Steam on July 21 isn't coming cold: there's already a world with history waiting for them.

The Steam Next Fest demo is live now on Steam. Full release is July 21.
