The Fair! The Fair!

With apologies to Santa, this is maybe the most wonderful time of the year in North Carolina. The N.C. State Fair has a little of everything – food, pig races, rides, livestock, music, pig races, crafts, contests and pig races. Go early and often. It opens Thursday (Oct. 13) at 3 p.m. and runs through Oct. 23.
International Fest
10 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday; Raleigh Convention Center, 500 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh; $6-$25; internationalfocusnc.org
More than 62 cultural groups showcase food, music, art and culture at this annual festival, which also has a world beer tasting, kids’ activities and a bazaar.
Film and art

Explore art, music and film at the Raleigh Film & Art Festival, which will have parties showcasing painters, tattoo artists, fashion designers, filmmakers and musicians.
Cary Diwali

Diwali, a religious and cultural event in India also known as the festival of lights, marks the victory of good over evil, light over dark and the beginning of the New Year. Expect vibrant performances, unique exhibits and fireworks.
World of Beer

The World of Beer Festival includes more than 250 beers with selections from N.C. and across the world. Plus this year, a cider garden with more than 25 varieties. (Seasonal beer showcase on Friday costs $30.)

The fourth annual Empty Bowls Dinner offers a great dinner and dessert along with live music to help nonprofit Table NC provide hunger relief to local needy kids.
