What’s On: “Newsies”

The buzz: Based on the 1992 Disney film, this 2012 Broadway musical tells the story of the 1899 New York City newsboys’ strike. They protested publisher Joseph Pulitzer’s reduction of profit on papers they sold, eventually winning their case. The musical won Tonys for Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli) and Best Original Score (Alan Menken and Jack Feldman).

Watch for: The stage-filling, high-energy dance numbers in which the newsboys, papers in hand and bags on their shoulders, spin, leap and execute thrilling acrobatic moves; the three-story set of scaffolding with cinematic projections.

About the tour: After the Durham stop, the tour moves on to Washington, D.C., Boston and Toronto, not returning near the Triangle until it plays Richmond in November.

Where to see it: Durham Performing Arts Center, 123 Vivian St.

When: 7:30 p.m. June 2-4; 8 p.m. June 5; 2 and 8 p.m. June 6; 1 and 6:30 p.m. June 7
