DF + Company Wang Ramirez after-party
On Thursday, July 9, you can meet some of the most accomplished dancers and performers from around the world when the American Dance Festival, RUNAWAY and ArtsNow host an after-party featuring Company Wang Ramirez at the Google Lounge and Rooftop patio at American Underground.
There will be tunes from DJ Mike B and cold refreshments. The event begins at 9:30 p.m., immediately following the company’s third and final performance of the week at Reynolds Industries Theater.
Wang Ramirez is a Berlin-based, award-winning artist duo, using dance as the main element to create unique conceptual work. As choreographers, creative directors and performers they bring dance toward music, film, fashion, contemporary art and advertisement.
During the event, you’ll also be able to win RUNAWAY merchandise and tickets to ADF. The party is free but space is limited so you need to register at http://bit.ly/1dA6z75.
New to modern dance or a rabid fan? Between the ages of 18 and 30? Check out ADF GO! The program offers $10 tickets at most ADF performances and is designed to make modern dance accessible for the young art enthusiasts in the community. You can learn more about the program at the ADF website.
‘Dreamgirls’ return
“Dreamgirls” won six Tony awards and made a star of Jennifer Holliday when it debuted on Broadway in 1981. The musical, which follows the story of a three young female singers from Chicago in the 1960s (a la The Supremes), went on to become a successful movie, but it’s on stage that the story of The Dreams truly comes alive. It’s a favorite on the touring circuit and comes to the Kennedy Theatre this week as part of Theatre Raleigh’s “Hot Summer Nights Series.”
It’s deemed suitable for ages 13 and up because of mild language and adult content.
Showtimes are 8 p.m. July 8-11, July 15-18, July 22-25, 2 p.m. Satudays (July 11, 18 and 25), and 3 p.m. Sundays (July 12, 19 and 26).
The theater is at 2 E. South St. in downtown Raleigh.
Tickets cost $27 and can be purchased via Theatre Raleigh’s website: www.theatreraleigh.com/. Call 919-832-9997.
Jazz on the lawn
Hot jazz on a summer evening is the promise at the Booth Amphitheater on Thursday, July 9, when the Hot Sardines perform.
The New York-based band is led by Evan “Bibs” Palazzo and plays jazz of the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s.
The concert is the season finale of the N.C. Symphony’s Rex Healthcare Summerfest Series. The symphony is presenting the show but not performing. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
Picnics, lawn chairs and blankets are allowed. General admission lawn tickets are $28, reserved table seating is $30; children 12 and under are free on the lawn.
The Amphitheatre is at 8003 Regency Parkway, just past the intersection of U.S. 1 and U.S. 64/Tryon Road in Cary.
For tickets, go to the North Carolina Symphony website at www.ncsymphony.org or call North Carolina Symphony Audience Services at 919-733-2750 or toll free 877-627-6724.
Feeding the body and soul
Art feeds the soul, of course, but at the Nasher this week it can also satisfy some very real hunger pangs.
The exhibit “Open This End: Contemporary Art from the Collection of Blake Byrne” at the Nasher closes July 12 and heads to Ohio, Oregon and New York before returning to the collector’s home in Los Angeles. Before it leaves, the museum will feature a dinner on Thursday, July 9, that offers a culinary tour of where it’s headed. The menu for the Thursday dinner includes Cincinnati Sauerkraut, a Waldorf salad, maple glazed salmon, and LA’s Famous Roscoe’s Chicken.
They start serving at 5 p.m., with the last seating at 8 p.m. Cost for three-course meal is $42. Reservations are required, 919-684-6032.
The exhibition features iconic and lesser-known works from some of the most significant artists of the last 50 years, and includes pop and conceptual art, minimalism, body-oriented performance art, among others. The title comes from a 1962 painting by Andy Warhol – the earliest work in the show.
The Nasher is at 2001 Campus Drive in Durham.
