Family Picks: Free Fishing Day plus a Honey Buzztival

From parades organized months in advance to your neighbors’ impromptu fireworks, it’s unmistakably the weekend of the 4th. Yet when the fireworks fade, the kids will still want something to do – never mind how tired their parents may be. In that spirit, this week’s Family Picks focuses on what else to do the weekend of Independence Day – and the week after.

▪ July 4th is traditionally free fishing day across the state – meaning you don’t need a license that day, though you do need to abide by size and lure restrictions (visit ncwildlife.org to look these up). Some local lakes, like Harris Lake in New Hill, even provide poles and basic instruction, though registration is recommended. Call 919-387-4342 or visit wakegov.com/parks/harrislake. For statewide info, check out nando.com/1g8.

▪ Kidzu Children’s Museum in Chapel Hill’s University Mall holds its “To Market, To Market” program on Tuesday afternoons. Participating families go as a group to the Chapel Hill Farmer’s Market, buy food and return to the museum to prepare something tasty with the ingredients. Call 919-933-1455 to sign up, or simply drop by at 3 p.m. to participate in this recurring event. The price is $10 per child, which includes the price of all food purchases. Visit kidzuchildrensmuseum.org.

▪ On Wednesday the Raleigh Downtown Farmer’s Market celebrates honey, from its inception in beehives to its many uses as an ingredient. The Honey Buzztival, as it’s called, runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City Plaza at 400 Fayetteville St. and is free. Get the details at nando.com/1g9.
