Tony Award-winning ‘Matilda’ tops in Durham
What’s on: “Matilda”
The buzz: Based on British author Roald Dahl’s children’s book, the musical “Matilda” follows a feisty, book-loving 5-year-old who uses her special powers to get back at restrictive teachers and student bullies. Still on Broadway, the show won five Tony Awards.
Watch for: The children on stage-filling swings, singing “When I Grow Up”; Bryce Ryness as headmistress Trunchbull in his/her big number, “The Smell of Rebellion.”
About the tour: Durham gets the show after a month’s run at Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center and a week in Memphis. Reviews have particularly noted the evolving set made of alphabet blocks and towers of books.
