What to Watch Wednesday: ‘Athlete A’ documentary follows gymnastics abuse scandal
Taking the Stage: African American Music and Stories That Changed America (8 p.m., ABC) - A repeat of the 2017 special celebrating the opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. It was filmed live at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and featured music, dance and dramatic readings by stars including Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige and Tom Hanks.
Athlete A (Netflix) - In this new documentary, filmmakers Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk delve into the unchecked abuse inside the world of elite competitive gymnastics. Equal parts devastating and inspiring, the film follows the IndyStar reporters as they reveal the extensive cover-up and culture of cruelty that was allowed to thrive within elite gymnastics, the attorney fighting the institutions and the brave whistle-blowers who refuse to be silenced. The film features Rachel Denhollander, the first woman to publicly accuse Larry Nassar, the former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics doctor, of sexual assault.
