UNC-TV program profiles Frank Daniels Jr. and the history of The News & Observer
The UNC-TV program “Biographical Conversations” has a special three-part look into the life of Frank Daniels Jr., former publisher of the once-family-owned News & Observer Publishing Company.
The News & Observer was founded by Frank Daniels’ grandfather, Josephus Daniels, in 1894. The newspaper and its holdings were sold to McClatchy in 1995.
In the first installment, Daniels talks about the beginnings of the Daniels legacy as owners of the newspaper. In part two, he discusses his childhood, education and his N&O tenure, including taking over as publisher of the newspaper when his father retired in 1986. In part three, Daniels talks about the influence of digital platforms and the paper’s sale to McClatchy.
