UNC grad’s artwork is featured in Spike Lee’s Netflix series ‘She’s Gotta Have It’

If you’ve already checked out the new “She’s Gotta Have It” series on Netflix, you’ve also seen the work of UNC grad and mixed-media artist Antoine Williams.

The artist’s pieces are shown in Episode 6, during a scene in which two of the show’s characters talk at an art show.

Williams, who holds a master of fine arts degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, has said his artistic inspirations are culture, music, education and hope. He lives in Greensboro now, and works as an assistant professor at Guilford College.

The 10-episode “She’s Gotta Have It” series is Spike Lee’s remake of his own 1986 film. The series follows the day-to-day life of Nola Darling, a young black artist living in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

A lot of attention is paid in the series to artists and their work. Williams’ distinctive work was part of a group show at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn this year, called “Race and Revolution” (see photo #18). Williams was also featured in the “Black on Black” show in Raleigh last year, sponsored by ArtsNow. His “For Freddie Gray” series was also featured at ArtSpace in 2016.
