What to Watch on New Year’s Day: A Linda Ronstadt documentary and new Doctor Who
Doctor Who (8 p.m., BBC America) - A new season starts with intelligence agents from around the world under attack from alien forces. As they travel the globe for answers, attacks come from all sides and Earth’s security rests on the team’s shoulders. The Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) is joined by Tosin Cole as Ryan, Mandip Gill as Yasmin and Bradley Walsh as Graham. Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry CBE guest star in tonight’s premiere.
Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice (9 p.m., CNN) - This is the television premiere of a 2019 documentary on singer Linda Ronstadt, the first woman musician to top the Country, Pop and R&B charts at the same time. Ronstadt has won 10 Grammys (26 nominations) and was a recipient this year at the 2019 Kennedy Center Honors. Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, “The Sound of My Voice” won Best Documentary at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards in November. Ronstadt narrates the film over footage of personal photos and archival film of concert and video performances, talking about her health issues and telling the stories behind some of her most popular songs, like “You’re No Good,” “Blue Bayou” and “When Will I Be Loved.”
