What to Watch Sunday: Kitten Bowl and Puppy Bowl all day, a little football at night
Kitten Bowl VII (2 p.m., Hallmark) - There should be a “cute overload” warning on this annual competition featuring more than 100 kittens from rescue groups across the country. Four teams compete for the Feline Football Championship: The Last Hope Lions, The North Shore Bengals, The Courageous Cougars and the Little Longtails. Some of the star “catletes” to look for are Alvin Catmara, Jacques LeMew, E-Squeakiel Elliott and Catrick Meowhomes. All of the kittens are adoptable. Announcers for the game are Jill Wagner and Brennan Elliott, and NFL legend Boomer Esiason retains his position as Commissioner of the Feline Football League. Beth Stern, TV personality and noted animal advocate, returns as host. Last night’s Cat Bowl, featuring older and special needs cats, airs after the Kitten Bowl at 4 p.m. Then the Kitten Bowl will repeat from 5 to 7 p.m.
Puppy Bowl XVI (3 p.m., Animal Planet) - 96 adorable — and adoptable! — doggos from 61 shelters across the North America will compete in the 16th annual Puppy Bowl. Team Fluff takes on Team Ruff in a battle sure to be full leaps, barks and enthusiastic puppy play. The game will feature some Pup Close and Personal profiles of special dogs, introduced by comedian Whitney Cummings and HGTV hosts Jonathan and Drew Scott. Dan Schachner returns as referee. The game starts at 3 p.m. but special Puppy Bowl programming starts as early as 6 a.m. Of note, last night’s Dog Bowl, featuring senior dogs, repeats at 1 p.m. and the Puppy Bowl Pre-Game Show starts at 2. With only one programming break from 5-6 p.m., Puppy Bowl will repeat all day and night (seriously, it repeats until 4 in the morning!).
Note: If you don’t have cable, you can stream both Kitten Bowl and Puppy Bowl if your streaming service (such as YouTube TV, Hulu Live or Sling) carries Hallmark and/or Animal Planet.
Super Bowl (6:30 p.m., Fox) - Kansas City Chiefs play the San Francisco 49ers. Kickoff is at 6:30 but tune in a little early to make sure you don’t miss the National Anthem, sung by Demi Lovato. The halftime show with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will most likely happen between 8 and 8:30 p.m. And of course, there are new commercials all night long!
