What to Watch on Saturday: New movies from Lifetime and Hallmark, new ‘SNL’ season
Dying to Be a Cheerleader (8 p.m., Lifetime) - Lifetime’s second annual Fear the Cheer movie event, highlighting movies about cheerleaders, starts tonight with this new offering about a young woman (Dominique Booth) who moves in with her aunt (Ashlynn Yennie) after her mother’s untimely death. At her new school, tries out for The Amazons, the school’s cheer squad led by Taylor (Kalen Bull) and April (Nicolette Langley). But when one of the cheerleaders on the team is found dead in the gym showers, Darcy is the main suspect. Another new Fear the Cheer movie, “Cheer Squad Secrets,” premieres Sunday night. In that movie, a woman helps her daughter become captain of the cheerleading squad only to discover that someone is giving her mysterious supplements.
Country at Heart (9 p.m., Hallmark) - In this new Hallmark movie, struggling Nashville musician Shayna is on the verge of giving up on her career and returns to her small-town home, where she meets songwriter Grady. Grady is trying to write a song for country music star Duke Sterling and Shayna seems like the perfect writing partner. The two grow closer and love blooms as they work on their song, but when Shayna meets Duke, who takes a liking to her and asks her to be his opening act, it undermines everything she and Grady created. Shayna feels forced to choose between love and possible stardom. Jessy Schram and Niall Matter star.
Saturday Night Live (11:30 p.m., NBC) - Season 46 of SNL starts with host Chris Rock, a performance by Megan Thee Stallion and ... a live studio audience! That’s right — the show returns to the studio, after ending last season with a series of episodes featuring virtual skits. One of this season’s new cast members, Lauren Holt, is originally from Charlotte. She comes out of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles. The show has also tapped Jim Carrey to play former Vice President Joe Biden this season.
Austin City Limits (Midnight, PBS / UNC-TV) - Also debuting its 46th season, ACL will open with a tribute to John Prine, who died earlier this year from COVID-19. The show includes highlights of Prine’s performances on “Austin City Limits” with the songs “Paradise,” “Sam Stone” and “Angel From Montgomery” and more. With special guest Bonnie Rait.
