NC family’s home wins ABC’s ‘Great Christmas Light Fight.’ See the incredible photos
‘Tis the season to deck the halls — and the roof, and the yard, and all the trees.
One North Carolina family’s house did just that in spectacular fashion, gaining national attention for its over-the-top Christmas decor.
ABC’s hit holiday decorating competition series “The Great Christmas Light Fight,” which returned on Dec. 5 with its Season 12 premiere, picked a family just outside the Triangle over three other families from across the country to win the episode’s $50,000 prize.
Here are the highlights from the episode.
‘Ready, set, glow’
For years, Yvonne Campbell has gone above and beyond alongside her family — who she calls the “Campbell’s light team” — to decorate her home in Oxford, North Carolina. Oxford is a little over an hour north of Raleigh.
Her love for decorating goes back more than 20 years, when she started out with a candle and an angel on her porch. Since then, she’s continued to go bigger and brighter with her displays.
The magic of ‘Campbellville’
This year, she and her relatives integrated a race car theme on their 1.5 acres of land.
From the front yard to the back, the Campbells’ holiday home features a 20-foot-tall mega tree with 6,400 pixels, a toy racetrack and Santa’s garage with a festive cart, a four-wheeler, an illuminated Slingshot and more.
“In our community, we don’t have a place where people can go see lights so I decided I wanted to do something, and every year, I get a little bit bigger and bigger and bigger,” she told the show’s judge, Carter Oosterhouse.
“There’s so many cool features in the Campbell display. They have about an acre and a half and they’ve covered every square inch of it,” Oosterhouse said.
“People can meander through there,” Oosterhouse said. “There’s trails. There’s fun lights to see…We’re pretty much out in the country, and for miles all around here, this is the place to be, and now I see why.”
In the end, the Campbell saw the “winning checkered flag at the end of the finish line” for their car racing display and were named the champions of “The Great Christmas Light Fight” season premiere.
“I didn’t expect it to be as large as it was. There’s just so many things to see. I mean, it’s just like it never ended,” Oosterhouse told the family. “You’re able to take what you love to do with your cars and put it into your display.”
After getting the iconic Light Fight trophy, a holly jolly Yvonne said, “It means everything in the world. We did this together, and I know we can do anything.”
