Two of the three hosts of a popular morning radio show are leaving the program after nearly a decade on the air together in the Triangle.
Brian Lord and Sarah King, two of the three morning show hosts of MIX Mornings with Kyle, Bryan and Sarah on MIX 101.5-FM, are leaving the show in the coming week.
“Not for any bad reasons,” Kyle Smelser told audience members Wednesday, July 15, in a podcast shared on social media. “There’s no scandal going on behind the scenes. There are life things happening in all our lives.”
Both of the departing hosts plan to spend more time with their families, they said in the podcast.
“I’ve been in this room with you two for 10 years, every day for five hours,” King said. “It’s nuts. I saw you more this whole time than I’ve seen my family. And that’s true. And therein lies the rub. ... I only have one son. We only have one life, and I need to prioritize my family.”
King, from Carolina Beach, claims she was lucky to “plucked” out of a wine shop where she worked and told she’d make a good morning show host.
“That’s the beautiful thing about radio,” she said. “It’s so intimate. It’s just our voices wherever you are, it’s in your car. There’s an intimacy there, and it’s just been the biggest privilege of my life to have this job.”
Lord specifically mentioned wanting to move his family back to Indiana especially after the recent death of his step-father.
“Our families are in Indiana,” he said. “This now gives us the chance to raise our kids around their cousins. It gives us a chance to raise our kids around their grandparents whose relationship with our kids has been through FaceTime and a handful of visits every single year. This gives us an opportunity to bring a new chapter into my mom’s life, so she won’t have to be alone. She’ll have her grandkids to help keep her fulfilled through the next chapter of her life.”
Lord and Smelter previously worked together in Indiana before being brought to North Carolina in 2016 for the MIX morning program, originally called “Two Men and a Mom.”
Friday, July 17, is the final show for Lord and the final show for King is Wednesday, July 22. Smelser will remain on the show with new co-host Meghan Lamontagne, the mid-day host on MIX.
