What to Watch on Tuesday: ‘This Is Us’ returns, plus more ‘Homicide’ in Charlotte

Finding Your Roots (8 p.m., PBS / UNC-TV) - Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. reveals unexpected family ties between Queen Latifah and actor Jeffrey Wright after researching their family trees.

This Is Us (9 p.m., NBC) - Kate meets Toby’s CrossFit friends and confronts Toby about the growing divide between them.

Homicide City: Charlotte (9 p.m., Investigation Discovery) - This week’s installment covers the murder of Charlotte teacher Anthony Davis, killed by one of the students he was trying to help.

America’s Great Divide: From Obama to Trump (9 p.m., PBS / UNC-TV) - This is the second part of Frontline’s two-night, four-hour documentary series from veteran filmmaker Michael Kirk, which examines the nation’s increasingly bitter, divided and toxic politics over the past decade. Tonight’s episode examines how Donald Trump’s campaign exploited the country’s divisions and how his presidency has unleashed anger on both sides of the divide.

New Amsterdam (10 p.m., NBC) - When last we tuned in, prisoners from Rikers had taken over the hospital. Tonight, Helen and Max find themselves in a situation that could cost them their lives.
